Latvia Welcomes More Travellers

New Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) data shows foreign travellers entered the country 7.7 million times during 2017, which was 13.7 percent more year-on-year. In 2017, travellers spent EUR691.9 million, which was EUR46.7 million or 7.2 percent more than 2016’s numbers.

CSB said Latvia was, during 2017 visited by 1.9 million foreign overnight travellers (8.7 percent more than 2016), who also spent 12.5 percent or EUR533.9 million more than throughout 2016.

Compared to 2016, the total number of nights spent in 2017 increased by one percent, reaching 8.9 million nights. Visitors stayed in Latvia for 4.5 days on average, 0.4 days fewer than 2016.

A significant increase was recorded in the number of foreign overnight travellers from the UK (95.7 percent) between 2016 and 2017, followed by smaller rise in the number of foreign overnight travellers from Germany (31.8 percent), Russia (9.3 percent) and Sweden (7.3 percent).

Decline, in turn, was observed in the number of foreign overnight travellers from Estonia (27.1 percent), Lithuania (19.8 percent) and Belarus (15.3 percent).

Most of the overnight travellers (88.1 percent) came to Latvia for tourism purposes.
